An improvement to my submission for NOKIA 3310 JAM 6, made for the deluxe challenge that was hosted shortly after. A very short platformer with a focus on exploration, where you have to find an exit while managing the bitter cold temperatures.

The original game is here, by the way: https://chaos-kid.itch.io/frostwander

This one has various new additions and features, including:

  • A brand new level: Factory! A totally unique environment, set in a much bigger map and introducing quite a few new mechanics.
  • An alternate NES & VRC7 soundtrack composed by myself in Furnace Tracker.
  • Feats - optional challenges for those who are so inclined.
  • Save data, so the game can remember the feats you've accomplished.

And, of course, many minor bug fixes!

I'd like to do one more level soon. But for now, I'm really tired, so I need to take a break.

April 7th, 2024 Update:

The third and final major update for this game is now out. Most notably, this includes the third and final map: Cliffs.

I also added best times that show on the level select screens, and did a lot of other stuff:

  • Added a safeguard for whenever a heat source fails to register the player leaving.
  • Made one-way dropping smoother. Player should no longer jump when you mean to drop down.
  • Properly centered win screens.
  • Set speed-related feats to be unlocked once the win trigger is hit.
  • Re-worded description for Normal difficulty.
  • Removed unnecessary out-of-bounds objects.
  • Hitting the win trigger now saves the game immediately.
  • The final, winning rooms in each level are now shown on the map as single-entrance rooms.
  • Fixed minor bug where the jukebox didn't properly remember which song was playing when you started the game.
  • Changes to the soundtrack under the Jukebox menu now saves the selection.
  • Added 15 seconds to the "Clocking Out" feat.
  • Very slightly lowered the weakening threshold for the cold.
  • The lead melodies in the NES+VRC7 versions of Tutorial and Journey are just a touch quieter now.
  • The amount of times a level is beaten is now saved internally, although this value is not used and may not ever be used in the future. Which begs the question of why I even did this in the first place, to which I have no answer, really.

April 10th, 2024:

Updated soundtrack.

April 11th, 2024

  • Fixed broken map piece in Cliffs.
  • Stopped music from playing when music was turned off. I honestly cannot believe I overlooked this.
  • Player's vertical position now clamps to the ground. This should also fix an issue where you could "float" in one of the rooms in Factory.
  • Prevented player from floating on inactive toggle tiles in Factory.
  • You can now hit F11 or F5 to toggle fullscreen in-game
  • Added a few new color palettes.

April 12th, 2024

  • Fixed player animations jittering, especially in HTML5.
  • Jetpack sprite now shakes on death like it's supposed to.
  • Completion screen no longer freezes up when music is turned off.
  • Secret jingle no longer still plays when music is turned off.
